Band: Metallica
Album: Master of Puppets
Track: Orion
Moment: 2:15 (ish)

Perfectly heavy rhythm line that's just perfect, yet so damned easy.

Also:

Band: Kincaide
Album: The Landscape Verses
Track: Something Survived
Moment: 1:55, the end of the second chorus. They get this insanely heavy sound coupled with a good 'ol Drop C riff. I wish I knew how they got this sound, since it's so fscking kick ass.

The song used to be up on Myspace, but it's been replaced lately. Search for it, since it's such an awesome song.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for a massive, bloody rhythm line.

If you find a tab of acid in there take it.
The further back you trip the older it is. If its a bad trip then you know its from the 80's.

Bark Psychosis - "The Black Meat" (Codenameustsucker): 2:49. If you've never heard the song, I don't want to spoil it. Definitely a wow moment.

The Dismemberment Plan - "The City" (Emergency & I): 3:13-to the end of the song. A phenomenal vocalist/lyricist at his peak.

The Dream Academy - "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" (The Smiths cover): It's in Ferris Bueller's Day Off while they browse the museum. One of the most moving pieces of music I have ever heard.

Jesu - "Dead Eyes" (Silver EP): 4:09. And then the world explodes...

King Crimson - "Exiles" (Larks' Tongues In Aspic): 7-16-7:40. I love the combination of sounds during this section.

Massive Attack - "Inertia Creeps" (Mezzanine): 0:48. When that beat drops it is insane.

Portishead - "Cowboys" (Portishead): 2:07-3:00. Sexy, scary, and ugly all at once.

Tool: 10,000 Days.
When Lost Keys bursts into Rosetta Stoned, "Tell me everything." and Maynard starts talking really fast through the megaphone about tripping on acid by Area 51. It's the only moment on the album that I actually enjoyed.

Tripping Daisy: I am an Elastic Firecracker.
Noose: When the chorus comes in, I never thought forced rhythmic laughter in a song could sound so good.

Melvins: (a) Senile Animal.
Rat Faced Granny: When the song breaks into the "Nothing New" part. It's awesome, I wasn't expecting anything good from the Melvins when this record came out but it absolutely blew me away.

Tom Waits: Real Gone.
Hoist That Rag: "Beat that weary drum today/ HOIST THAT RAG" If you've heard it, you know what I mean.

The Sugarman Three: Pure Cane Sugar.
Modern Jive: The horns at 45 seconds. They're so PURE.

The Strokes: First Impressions of Earth.
Ize of the World: When the song suspends on the single chord, the drums just playing hihat 16th notes accenting every beat on the crash, then everything breaks right back into the main chorus riff. I can't even count how many times I've listened to this song, and it still brings a tear to my eye.

The Streets: Original Pirate Material.
Don't Mug Yourself: Mike's awesome, I can't even pick a favorite moment out of this song because it's so awesome, but here's an arbitrary moment that I like: "Stop me if I'm wrong, stop me if I'm wrong."

Sufjan Stevens: A Sun Came!
Jason: For some reason, this song gives me goosebumps. This is another one where I can't pick out a single moment because the whole song is so perfect.

Dr. Octagon: Dr. Octagonecologyst.
Real Raw: "You be there, like Michael Jackson in my atmosphere - Gerbils for rectums, I break you off like Richard Gere. I'm so fantastic, your metal fist is still plastic. Compelled with no threats, your rhymes bounce off my shield."

Dandy Warhols: Come Down
Be-In: The choruses!!! They opened up with this song when they came to town and my head just about exploded. I almost had to put the Warhols in my 'can't pick a moment' list, but then I remembered that this is my all time favorite Dandies 'moment'.

This is all I can think of right now.

I'm intentionally leaving out Beck, MF Doom, Ween and the Flaming Lips because they're my favorite bands and I don't want to have to pick out any moments.

I'm glad you reminded me of that moment; it's truly an epic one.

Every time Lou Reed switches on the Tonebender in "I Heard Her Call My Name".

Black Crowes "Sometimes Salvation" First note of the solo.

Royal Trux - "Sickazz Dog" There's this part when they're singing "hey, hey, hey" and I'm not sure but I think it's a reference to the flying pig from the Kids in the Hall. Cracks me up every time I hear it.

Nice. I had to "learn" this song this week for an audition with a mod-style cover band and I *really* dig playing this song. I seriously hope these guys can find a Hammond player...

Here are a few from me. I just did a quick scan of the iPod and grabed a few songs, also trying to avoid the most obvious anthems.

Band: The Matthew Good Band
Album: Last of the Ghetto Astronauts
Song: "Symbolistic White Walls"
Magic moment: 3:07 - bass and hi-hat break down with a lean vocal going "It's alright now, take the world and make it yours again..."

Band: The Icicle Works
Album: If You Want To Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song
Song: "Evangeline"
Magic moment: 0:00 - the keyboard intro. I love that keyboard line. This is also my all time favourite title for an album.

Band: John Frusciante
Album: Curtains
Song: "The Past Recedes"
Magic moment: 2:20 - the solo. Beautiful. The doubled acoustic guitar in the beginning is just perfect.

Band: Roxy Music
Album: Avalon
Song: "More Than This"
Magic moment: 0:00 - The guitar intro. Loud, on a nice hi-fi...mmm...a gorgeous wash of sound.

Band: The Gandharvas
Album: Sold for a Smile
Song: "First Day of Spring"
Magic moment: ~2:38 - when the trem guitar comes in for the big ending and the vocals go "My friend yeaaaaa...it's time that you being again..." That's a perfect build to a perfect song.

+1 Hell yea! And you can't beat the chorus in "Life In a Northern Town", with that big choir-type "Ah hey um na na na". I left OMD off my list. I got their greatest hits from my 'rents for my birthday this week, they had some killer tracks in the Crush-era as well.

Band: Destroyer
Song: The Bad Arts
When the guitar comes in and plays the vocal melody, good lord.

Band: Smashing Pumpkins
Song: Soma
The bridge comes down into just one guitar playing that beautiful arpeggio, and then BAM! The hugest effing wall of sound ever, and then a ridiculously ripping melodic solo.

Band: Minus The Bear
Song: Drilling
The first chorus, and the bridge after it, and the totally sweet sounding tapped/slid chords ala Dave Knudson.

Band: The Sword
Song: Winter's Wolves
From 1:00 to 1:45. The first time I heard this, I almost drove my car into a giant propane tank as a salute to Odin. This is what wolfmother would sound like, if they had testicles.

Band: Mono
Song: 16.12
From 5:00 minutes in until the end of the song. This is what I imagine the end of the world sounding like.

are you talking about the solo that takes place at like 3:30 that does the "you've got the spirit don't lose the feeling" melody? because i love that part and i love the lead up to the explosion.

probably my favourite destroyer song ! i'm seeing destroyer this saturday !

i also love the space race when it goes into the quirky dance part for no reason at all and the guitar riff right after is awesome

There's just too many to list. I often forget just how great parts of some songs are after not hearing them for a long time. I'm just going to go with something that I was listening to on the way to work.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stadium Arcadium, "Especially in Michigan," the second pre-chorus where the dirty guitar comes in.

John Frusciante has a bunch of parts on the album that have some outstanding guitar tone, but that one really stuck out on my morning commute.

There's also a great moment of his in "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik". The first solo on "I Should Have Lied" is kickass and really adds up to the song. The second one is also great, but the first one is really impressing, as you would never expect that punchy, raunchy, dirty guitar to come around like that.

band: beirut
album: gulag orkestar
song: postcards from italy
at 2.53 when the horns "drop" if you will, its pretty intense

band: neutral milk hotel
album: in the aeroplane over the sea
song: two headed boy
at 2.20 ish when the chorus finally comes in "in the dark we will take off our clothes..." actually that album is pretty much one huge orgasm

band: a silver mount zion
album: born into trouble as the sparks fly upwards
song: the triumph of our tired eyes
2 minutes, violins enter as efrim menuck says "there's beauty in this world... i just dont often see it"

there's also a bit later in the song at 3.03 as the violins build into this crescendo as he sings "musicians are cowards!" over and over

this could turn into a proper ramble so i'll stop
