Kenny Burrel, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery, Johnny Smith, John McLaughlin, Joe Pass, Django Reinhardt: A few of the biggies.

An acoustic guitar attracts Casper. A mandolin attracts Wendy. But an electric guitar attracts Beelzebub.

I've heard good things about Charlie Hunter, but not actually heard him play.

I love Joe Pass and Stanley Jordan. Both completely seperate and different artists, but they're great

It kinda highlights the limits of my jazz knowledge really....

Derek Bailey, although he prefers to call what he does "non-idiomatic improvisation." And that guy with glasses, I'll just keep typing until I remember his name, Bill Frissell. Jeff Parker is OK too.

I saw Al Di Meola on the BETJazz channel the other evening. I'd never seen him play before, but that guy is unbelievably fast. He was playing with Jean-Luc Ponty and Stanley Clarke. I have those guys CD, Right of Strings, it's a really good disk.

Definitely check out John Scofield and Joe Pass. I'm not a big fan of those fusion guys from the seventies, but that's just me.

charlie hunter is great. He doesn't just play jazz standards, he really adds to modern jazz guitar (he plays an 8 string guitar, and does the bass line, chords, and leads/solos. No bass. No keys. His music is very groove-oriented and I've heard it been called "jam" as well, whatever that is (alot of other styles can contain jams). He himself doesn't classify it as jazz, and I agree...it is very original, containing elements from alot of styles and really putting them together nicely for a unique sound.

I'm not one for traditional jazz guitarists, so I'll leave it to others to recommend Farlow, et al. That said, Mark Whitfield is very good. He's about the only contemporary guitarist playing in that "Wes Montgomery" style that has gotten my attention.

Like Fiveways, I suggest checking out Sonny Sharrock. I can't recommend his work enough, although it may not be your cup of tea.

Some of Bill Frisell's work has been excellent, especially his playing with John Zorn.

Another guitarist I cannot recommend enough is Marc Ribot, especially his work in the Lounge Lizards and with Zorn.

Nels Cline's jazz work is great too. His and Gregg Bendian's take on Coltrane's Interstellar Space is outstanding, as is his other work with Bendian. If I could ever remember the name of the acoustic free jazz guitarist that Bendian played with in Nashville back in May 2000 as the opener for King Crimson, I would recommend him, as well.
