Krautrock

Oh, how my obsession grows...

It started with Can and Kraftwerk, then I got into Neu!, and now I'm poring over work by Amon Duul II, Tangerine Dream, Michael Rother, Cluster, Harmonia, Golem, Ash Ra Tempel, Eloy, Guru Guru and so many more.

Anyone else love this beautiful, strange, isn't really a genre genre?

No Devo?

They had other songs besides "Whip It", you know.

And check out a song called "An Echo In" by the band The Sea And Cake. It's on their CD called Glass. Great interpretation of the krautrock sound.

I'm a huge Krautrock fan. The first time I listened to 'Ege Bamyasi' I nearly crapped myself. That's how good they are. Neu are similarly excellent though they are more chilled. They are kind of proto-ambient with that minimal and brash futuristic sound. Neu, for me, is what the future must have sounded like in the 70s.

Michael Rother and Damo Suzuki are on at All Tommorrow's parties here in England soon, hosted by The Mars Volta. If that isn't one of the greatest things I ever see then I might as well just die now.

The thing I like about Krautrock is that many of the bands manage to be spacey whilst avoiding bad psychedelic rock cliche sounds. Krautrock isn't about getting obliterated on LSD and turning on a phaser pedal.

Also check out Faust. Go for Faust - IV. Kind of noisy soundscapes and fuzzy electronics with rock.

yes iv by faust is probably my favourite krautrock recording... and don't forget the very first kraftwerk albums (1, 2 and ralph & florian, which is probably the best of all three).

devo definitely aren't krautrock, they are one of the first new wave bands...

If you're into Krautrock, check out Can. It's like Pink Floyd, but with more improvisation

Their best CD is Tago Mago

I'm in no way comparing them to the omnipotent Pink Floyd. I'm just saying thats kind of what they sound like

Dude, nothing personal, but last time I checked, Cleveland is nowhere near Germany...

Regardless of the Conny Plank connection, I think Devo was pretty safely outside of the Krautrock movement, despite the fact that they were clearly influenced by it.

I'm really jealous of those Mars Volta cats-- not only are Rother and Suzuki on the bill, but they scored Holger Czukay too. ****ers!

I've got Faust IV and the first two albums, too-- that's some hot ****, right there.

Seriously! There are places where they might as well be the same band... Still, I like the first two or three Hawkwind records. They've got a quaint charm, for having been made a bunch of hippie assholes. And Lemmy.

The Soft Machine-- now there's a weird, underground psych band! Third still rocks my face every time I hear it...

No, you're absolutely right. I was off base. It's just that someone once made me a mix tape that had a lot of krautrock and krautrock-influenced bands on it and some of the non-German stuff was pretty similar stylistically. At least to my ears, maybe that's where my confusion stems. I was never too knowledgable about the whole movement. Ironically, I once went to Germany and met a huge Devo fan!

And Akron, where Devo is actually from, is a good hour south of Cleveland.

My old bass player was a huge krautrock fan - on our last tour we were driving along the autobahn with his self burnt 'best of krautrock' cd cranked - too much fun. It amazes me how many indie/postrock bands sound uncannily like can and neu at times (although without the spark of originality ) Especially the beats and drum fills. (I'm looking at you Life Without Buildings).

For the truly out their, check out Mythos. The cover art says it all - giant eyeball head type things with viking helmets and converse all stars. That's what it's all about...

Also. I got to see Damo Suzuki with a bunch of people including Omar or whatever hios name his from the Mars Volta. What a fine gig that was.
