See the title, is this any good for a starting recording artist to record some simple demo material. And eventually buy better mics etc.?

Well unless you particularily like the mixer in the pack save some money and buy the (Behringer)UCG102 it has a simple USB interface and all the same software. As far as I could tell the Podcast pack does not really let you do similtaneous multitrack recording.

Or just use the two tracks available on any soundcard and some free/shareware.

Wow NoFoBro, that Behringer UCG102 looks pretty interesting! It's cheap, and gives me an easy way to plug into my computer! Can I hook up a microphone or any other instrument to it too? (I think so but I'm just asking..just in case). This would pretty much be perfect for me!

Please tell me what exactly a multitrack sequencer does? I'm guessing you can edit all the different tracks in your song at the same time or something, but I'm a complete recording noob!

I think I'll also be getting one or two mics aswell (one for micing amps/maybe vocals and another for acoustic instruments I guess). Suggestions?

A multitrack sequencer generally relates to MIDI information and controls the timing (and other parameters) of sample triggers. I'm not familiar with either Kristal or Audacity, but my impression is that the software includes 16 track Audio recording DAW software. Like most DAW software it is MIDi compatable so you can probably assign tracks to be MIDI and act as a sequencer. But I am guessing that based on the extremely limited info on the Behringer website.

If cash is scarce (and I'm guessing it is) the Behringer XM1800s will get the job done and can be purchased in a pack of three for cheap. Micing acoustic instruments is a black art and you can get great results with simple equipment and fail to get good results with the best equipment. The overall room sound and mic placements seem to make more difference than the actual mics used.

In short, on a budget buy cheap and multitask.

If you only have one mic input I'd buy an SM58, but that's just me.
