i think i want a mic what does everyone suggest
Hi,
well ive been playing for a while and me n a mate were talkin about recording everything we play even if its just rubbish just to see how we actually sound and how some of our written stuff sounds ![]() ive been looking electro harmonix mics as im abit of an EHX fan boy lol anyway i just want a mic that i can plug into anything that gives a good sound aswell money isnt really an issue here but i stress that this is a hobby so no crazy expensive pro mics hehe also if you think i should go for an external sound card aswell then what do you suggest. ideally sound card wise i guess i just want something that can be used with my laptop and my desktop. software wise im using adobe audition (the latest release) i will get better software eventually but audition does me fine thanks in advance |

If you're just going to record one track at a time onto your computer (and only purchasing one track)
I'ld recommend getting a USB Mic...I wish I had. It'll be cheaper and about the same quality as if you bought an SM57 and a usb interface. (thats just link to a MF search for 'usb mic'). If you're not going to spend a whole lot of money on a decent preamp you're probably better off with the a decent USB mic. My friend has one and it works pretty well.

He's got a cheap samson. He uses it on his mac so latency is not bad at all. (my pc probably wouldn't be the same story)
I thought ASIO meant simultaneous in/out? i'm not sure the answer but he's just going out through his headphone jack...not through the mic.

you are almost right ASIO is 'audio stream input/output'
basically a driver that lets you use internal hardware, with minimal latency. cheers for the answer though (sorry for thread hijacking) more to the point, you can buy podcast kits fairly cheap, with an interface for direct monitoring, a mic and some softwear (maybe some headphones if you are lucky) behringer and m audio do them as far as i know, most likely others out there too. |

it's kind of like buying one of those game systems with one game on them.

No you can't. That's the whole argument against them.

USB mics are super convenient, not gonna lie. But they are really limiting, and most are designed with very little headroom. I personally would recommend getting a dedicated interface and mic. (never ever ever plug a mic directly into a computer, it sounds like poop).
Mic wise, Audio technica, akg, and MXL all make great stuff for $200 and under. and the Maudio fast track series is perfect for demoing songs. also if you would like to expand your recording rig in the future, this is where to start. a usb mic will just need replaced.

Alesis Multimix, is good, in my band use one of these interfases, and works nice, no latency. And for mic, a good ol' Shure SM57 do a great job.

thanks for the advice so far
![]() i remember someone showing me an external thing for pc ages ago it was fire wire i think .. may have been usb but anyway it looked a solid thing but the great thing about it was that the centre detached from the main rig so that you could take it with you with out having to unplug the rest of your studio equipment so it would be great for taking it round a mates for recording etc does anyone know about what im talking about at the time it was like £400 and i was a poor student so couldnt afford it ![]() acn anyone help me figure out what it was called please? thanks again for your time |

this is what you're talking about. I donno much about them...but unless you really need to leave part of it plugged in i'ld get the best QUALITY i could get for that kind of money instead of having the ability to carry part of it around. (you can buy an extra usb cable if you need to carry it around with it still plugged in)

The detachable part of the onyx is about as big as a fast track pro or a toneport, which are already portable.
The only addition you get is 6 more outputs, which is fairly pointless. The extra inputs are useless - only 2 can be active at once.
