I just starting to look into using MIDI to do some recording. I have a $100 Yamaha keyboard laying around that has a MIDI in and out on it. Will that work as a MIDI controller for a software synth?

Yup. Before I ponied up for an Axiom I used an old (like circa-1990) Yamaha PSR keyboard as a controller. Not quite as versatile as a dedicated controller but for simple stuff it worked great.
