Reaper
I bet a lot of you already know about this but if you dont i reccomend it. Reaper is a freeware multitrack like cubase i find it really easy to use and the price tag makes it oh so much better than cubase.

I just downloaded it again recently. It's much improved from earlier versions. Definitely a great budget multitrack recorder. Technically, it's not freeware though and I do plan on registering it if I start to use it frequently.
Another product that I really like on a budget to functionality basis is Magix Music Studio. I paid $30 and got a $30 rebate so it was free for me. But for a $30 package it does more than I was able to do with the Tascam 424 I paid $600 for way back when. Awesome deal. The noise removal tools are worth it alone!

It's free to download and the only thing that changes after 30 days is you have to wait 6 seconds to open and watch the 'Buy Me' message. It remains fully functional. Hell it takes at least 30 seconds for Cubase to start up.
