Pickup/Pickguard shielding

Hey, so I've got a Squier strat which needs some form of shielding. My guitar is just noisy in general, and the pickups I had installed didn't help matters. I've got a boss ns-2, but i still want to quiet this down, and I've heard that shielding the pickguard can help with that. What exactly is involved in shielding a pickguard and is it worth me trying and potentially messing it up versus taking it to my local shop? Thanks for the help
