The Smashing Pumpkins in "Vieuphoria"

I got this DVD for Christmas and it's awesome! It's got some hilarious parts and crazy performances. So my question really pertains to those who have seen it. On the performance of Silver****, what the hell is James doing at the end?! He's got some space helmet on and he's shooting at his guitar with a toy gun?! It actually sounded pretty awesome and I was just curious as to what he was actually doing to make that sound, if anybody knows? Anyways, it is a really good DVD and if you haven't seen it, it's definatly worth a "vieu" (sorry I had to ) For those of you who have seen it, post your favorite part of it as well. Mine would have to be...

Billy: *pointing at a banged-up Marshall 1960 cab* "To a normal person, this just looks like a regular Marshal 1960 4x12 but actually in it is a small child"

That has to be one of my favorite DVDs. The stuff they're playing at the end of Silverf*ck are actually some pieces off one of the songs on the Zero EP. My favorite part has to be when they're in Germany and the crowd is throwing cups at Billy and he throws them back. He was so f*cking pissed!!

"All right you can stop throwing the cups now. Jokes over. Stopenz ze throwen ze cuppenz"

yes I agree this is a highlight of vieuphoria. The Soma and Silver**** performances are quality and the guitars and drums sound really good throughout. I think Billys singing can be a bit dodgy at times though.

Also has anyone noticed he went through a period during siamese dream era of wearing really bad jumpers? (check out the japan interview before Slunk!)

The bad jumpers were part of the grunge anti image thing. Kurt used to wear old jumpers with holes in. After the over the top image of 80's hair rock grunge was a deliberate reaction to it. So you tried to look like someone Adrian Mole bullied at school. Around that time I used to wear black jumpers full of holes and army boots. I cringe.

You can hold anything over the pick ups and it will be picked up by the pick ups. Try it with delay and you can get some great walls of sound. I also use an electric razor with a pitchshifter and delay - but NEVER use anything mains powered like a hairdryer or it may possibily kill you.

My question about veiwforia is Soma. Just before the loud section billy plays a little backward solo. If you watch he plays half a second before the sound. I'd guess it's a horribly expensive rack effect - but what is it?

The backwards effect in Soma is from an Eventide H3000. Billy revealed this in Guitar World a long time ago. Those things are a ton of money. He also uses that effect live and on the album for Starla.

I actually found the bootleg of the majority of that show from Germany with the (stoppenz throwenz), great version of Drown also from that show if I remember correctly.

The raygun is also seen in the footage from the Metro last show on the Greatest Hits DVD. James has it in his holster but doesn't use it on Ode to NO One. He probably was saving it for the ultimate conclusion of Silver**** to close the show.

well...nevermind then. hey for the machina tour, does anyone know what amp/pedal combo he used for live shows? because i have a few clips from musique plus, and all of the tones that would be clean are overdriven...and all tones that would be broken up turn into insane distortion~ just wonderin

I love that DVD and the best parts are the ones that have allready been mentioned (jumpers, cups......) but I also love how crap billys hair is when they are recording Siamese Dream (whilst wearing the jumper) That studio interview is really great......

*puts on vieuphoria*

the ray gun is a very brilliant touch. my band does something similar when we play "tyler" by the toadies. we found a little toy mirror that says little nonsense quotes like "
you look just like a princess! i wish i were as pretty as you." it is rather humorous... we used to use a ray gun nicknamed "the vertical extrapolater" but the mirror is too classic.

I have that raygun! Now, if I could only find the helmet...

And yes, how DOES one achieve that pick scrape sound in Soma? It's always been a mystery to me.
