I really have to get these questions answered im so curious
![]() So first off, do soundhole pickups sound good? ive heard good and bad things, and to stay away from some brands. Secondly, do you need a certain type of acoustic amp? i know they have acoustic amps but those are used mainly for use with mics.. or am i wrong? Could i amplify my acoustic with my fender tube? Can I use my pedals with my acoustic? I feel like overdriving an acoustic a little bit would sound good..? |

Soundhole pickups do sound good, for good sounding ones that aren't too expensive try Dean Markley, their Pro Mag pickups sound great.
No you don't need a certain type of acoustic amp, any one will do. As for tube amps, or any type of guitar amp for that matter it'll sound fine. Your Fender's glassy cleans will sound good with an acoustic, you might need to turn the treble down a little unless you have a preamp between your pickup and amp. Acoustic guitars can sound pretty bright. As for the effects you can use them, just be careful about using any gain, acoustic guitars by their design are very prone to feedback. Effects like chorus, delay and reverb sound great with an acoustic.

You can do what you like mate, look at John Butler!
But to answer your question a little more accurately, if you're looking for the sound of a miked up acoustic, you're not going to get it running a soundhole pickup into a guitar amp. Guitar amps and Acoustic amps are a fair bit different, mainly with their speakers. Closest you'll get to a miked acoustic sound with a soundhole pickup is into a nice acoustic preamp plugged into the mixing desk. Just have a play around and see what you think sounds good. |
