i did use the GE-7 without the mod, and that worked great for me. no tone loss, or volume loss for me. i had it setup to give me a little "fatter" sound. i just always had it on too.

The unmodded GE-7 is a bit noisy especially if you have a boost after it. It really does fatten up/shape my tone. It really makes my TS-9 and Keeley DS-1 sound way better.

+1, beat me to the punch. ive played a modded one and an unmodded one side by side and there is definitely an increase in sound quality with the modded one.

Best is a very relative term.

I know this thread is about graphic EQs but I can't help mentioning the Boss PQ-4. I love mine to death. If you are considering EQ pedals, especially for lead boosts, I would suggest that you open your options to a parametric EQ as well as a graphic EQ.

Not necessarily the best but I've had no problems at all with my behringer eq. no hum with battery or mains power, its a pedal board essential for me

I've only used an MXR 10 band EQ. An EQ is an EQ. I bought the MXR because it looks cooler. All the sliders have LEDs in them to show their position when its on stage, and the screenprint ink glows in the dark.

What is it that you plan to do with the EQ? Why do you seek a graphic EQ? The trouble with graphic EQs is the bands, while many, may not be the precise bands you see to do what you want to your sound. You're limited to what MXR or Boss thought were good bands and good Q on each notch.

Personally, I'd take a good parametric EQ any day. A handful of bands which I can tune perfectly will beat out, for me, a deuce of bands selected by someone at MXR. To that end I highly recommend this guy. I had a beta model and it changed forever what I thought of EQ. Previously I didn't think much of them. There were there for a little boost (if you were lucky enough to luck the bands for boost) or for solving "sonic problems" like acoustic feedback. And they always came at the cost of nasty noise floors. The ParaEQ is elegantly simple to operate, does way more than just boost or cut to fix sonic problems, and doubles as a wickedly nice clean boost.
