nobody knows what it's based on, so your question is a hard one.

what kind of tone are you looking for, just a booster, or a really light overdrive pedal?

It's my understanding that the Klon may be used to boost an overdriven amp or act as a preamp. After Nels Cline raved about his Klon Centaur, which he uses as a preamp/overdrive, I started looking into them. The 400 USD price tag quickly turned me off of them, though. Nonetheless, I did do a good bit of research into the Klon and some of the alternatives.

On the preamp/overdrive side of things the Banzai Fireball II, Hermida Technology Zendrive, and Prescription Electronics The Dual Tone all seemed to fill a niche similar to that of the Klon Centaur.

On the boost/overdrive side of things the Catalinbread Super Chile Picoso, Super Charged Overdrive, and Sagrado Poblano Picoso all seemed to offer variations on the Klon theme, as did the Z-Vex Super Hard-On and Super-Duper 2-in-1.

Another pedal that seems to be very similar to the Klon Centaur is Subdecay Liquid Sunshine.

FWIW I gave up trying to find something similar to the Klon after I realized that I prefered the natural break-up of an overdriven tube amp to a pedal. One pedal I have found that looks very promising as a boost is the Barge Concepts DB-1 Dual Boost. According to Barge Concepts you can cascade the two boosts together to get 54db of gain. Another pedal that seems very promising is the Death By Audio Interstellar Overdrive, especially the master volume version.

I had the non-master volume one for a while... it was a VERY aggressive pedal. Extremely gritty. I sold it because the boost in volume was so drastic even at the lowest setting. I guess a master volume control would have fixed that.

Beraduur, do you know if there are any production pedals which are a clone (or close to one) of the Colorsound?

I'm not Beraduur

Thank you good sir. I have forgotten about a couple of those. I wonder if the Vintage FX pedal at $100 sounds as good as the other, more expensive versions.

Was the aggression purely volume based, or was it something else?

From the available sound clips the Vintage FX pedal does sound as good as the others. FWIW I would opt for it over the others. The Throbak pedal can get a bit more fuzzy than the others, which may be a good thing

To be honest if you are looking for a Klon Centaur style pedal you are not going to find one!!! I hear the Maxon Reissue is close but not to my ear!!

If you want a Klon buy a Klon it to me is the only pedal that sounds like it, expensive yes!! Is it worth it absoluatly!!

My only gripe with the Klon is that it works best with less pedals the less you have to me the better the pedal is!!

I currently have about 10 pedals in my unit BUT if I had decreased the unit with the Klon first in line I can guarantee you the Klon would be KILLER!!
