germania
i read an article in a guitar magazine about something called a home brew electronics germania. it's a boost pedal and supposed to be very similar to a dallas rangemaster. it looks pretty cool, especially for the price, which is a little over $100. just wanted to know what all of you geeks thought about it.

The HBE website is here: http://www.homebrewelectronics.com/products.htm
I got a Beano Treble Booster made by Retroman, here is a link to his HC post: http://www.harmony-central.com/Effec.../Beano-01.html These give you a boost of treble, and kind of drive you tubes a bit. It's not an overdrive, the pedal itself doesn't distort, it just adds a push. Treble boosters can be noisy. This particular one that I bought has a 'hiss knob', which I can use to dial out the excessive noise that it causes (very normal for these pedals). If you play a tube amp and use an overdrive from either pedals or an amp, this adds a 'bite' to your sound. I wouldn't recommend it to use all the time, only when needing that extra push and cut. If you play a transistor amp, it will sound like poo. I've used it into a tube driver pedal, and it was not bad, it cleaned up nicely and added a whole lot of clean drive. These have a selector switch that allows 3 different options (in varying degrees of brightness). These things will make your sound a lot brighter, to the point where it's piercing sometimes. Famous treble booster users: Brian May, Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Clapton and others (that I can't think of at the moment). PM me for Retroman's email if you are interested.

Most boosters are pretty much the same. The schematic for them is so simple there really isn't much that can be picked between them.
I've heard good things about the SCP. I also have to mention the Z Vex Super Hard On if just because it has the greatest name ever. |

deafbox- i just got mine in the mail today !
i can't try it out yet,b/c all my gear is at my band's practice space in the business district, but i like looking at it. funky vinyl covering on it, i MIGHT have to paint over the chile w/the condom, but overrall its pretty rad looking. this one has a green LED.

wow! what an old thread i'm responding too...
i got to try out an HBE germania44 with my rig today. its the same as a regular germania but with a rare mullard OC44 transistor, or something like that. i don't know what that means, i just like the way it sounds. in fact, i liked it a lot .so i took it home :] never used a treble boost before today, but its very tonefull...doesn't make it sound shrill or anything. i would imagine it wouldn't work too well with an already bright amp like a JCM800, but i may be wrong. i haven't got the chance to try it out with my 800 yet. |

Right I've got to ask, cos I'm at a bit of a loss here...
are the 'boosters' you are refering too all Pickup boosters? as I think I have a good idea how the Z.Vex super hard on works, are all 'boosters' generally another way of producing more output from your pickups by driving more current back through them? oh and would using something like that on active pickups screw your pickups? |

Nah, not at all. These boosters are just like preamps... take your signal and make it hotter/louder... and usually change it tonally too. To my knowledge, they don't fudge with your pickups.

Ah ok, its just I dunno about trying to force current to do all the work inside a pair of EMG-81's!! I don't want to fudge those bad boys up!! lol!
this is from the Z.Vex website: The Super Hard-On's input impedance is so high (>5 Meg) that it refuses any current flow from your pickup... maintaining the most magnetic field around each string, so you can hear exactly what your pickup sounded like the day it came off the winder. So can I use active pick ups with it? Well not like I'd need to, as obviously they would be doing almost the same job anyway, but just incase I get a z.vex and plug it on while forgetting its on when changing guitars lol! |

I ordered a germania off tonefactor and it should be here this week...
I already have a booster (MXR Micro amp) But I wanted to try out a treble booster, the pickups on my 60s Teisco are too warm and could do with an extra 'bite'...I'll check it out to see how it differs to a Micro Amp, maybe I'll use one, maybe I'll use both!

This couldn't be further from the truth. A simple thing like one capacitor or transistor change can make a huge difference.
