Line6 M5 vs Eventide Modfactor
After re-reading another old recs thread I'd started - the modulation effects one - I've narrowed my wishlist down to either the Line6 or Eventide.
Both would occupy roughly two pedals'-worth of room on my board and cover all the bases for occasional modulation use. I think I could use either with no regrets, but I'd like to hear from anyone who can vouch for the respective quality in terms of *sound* since the price difference is pretty large. They offer a lot of the same effects types (chorus, phase, flange, trem, little oddities that I could have fun with) plus MIDI connections if I were ever to learn how to use that sort of stuff (in a home studio setting I wouldn't rule it out). It's a long shot in asking if anyone's familiar with Line6's AND Eventide's respective multi-fx but it's proved even tougher to find somewhere to try them out side-by-side like I usually do when making decisions like this. I don't think either option is a bad one, but still. Thoughts?

I owned a ModFactor for a while there and it was a *great* pedal. What it does, it does really well. My biggest gripe with it was sometimes I wanted it in my loop and sometimes I wanted it in front of my preamp and making that possible was very hard (I would have had to build a very custom, very complicated, switcher).
In the end I left it in the loop. But it *only* does modulation effects. I've played with a friend's M5 and it's a very cool little pedal. All the processing power of the DL-series pedals, just a smaller form factor. You get all the Line6 effects including their pretty awesome delays. It does a lot more than the ModFactor. Unfortunately I didn't own the ModFactor at the time I played with the M5 so I can't really give you a good head to head. Just, effects-wise, the M5 brings more. Maybe that's good. Maybe that's bad. But if it's modulation only you're after I don't think you can go wrong with the ModFactor. Very, very nice modulation pedal. I still haven't quite replicated its "Liquid Chorus" patch in the Axe-Fx. I've gotten close. But not quite as nice.

Can't say I've owned or used the Modfacter.... I went with the M5 for a little while, and also went ahead and ordered a Mission Engineering expression pedal as well. Quite a cool feature if you need to make those "oohs" and "ahhs", as you can set where the toe and heel position are, and go from there
Also had a decent Digitech Whammy in it as well. Was very sweet in what it did, and had everything, all the whooshes and wahs. Makes you want the M9 or M11 at that point though, as it's only one of those effects.I bought it instead of a DL-4, and it did a lot of what I was looking for. Quite digital sounding though, where if you can get along with a Boss DD-6, you'll be set. Only thing it was missing is the looper. But I could deal without, switch effects on the fly, midi capable, and the built in Tuner made it easy.... If you want to open windows and experiments, the M5 I would say is the unit. I went to a vintage AD-9 for my delays, haven't looked back, sold the M5, cause I didn't use it enough. I had the same experience as iaresee though with in the loop or in front of the amp, but the distortions and boosts are quite convincing. I liked the barber pole whooshes from it to get 80's style, and the chorus wasn't bad at all, could get almost analog like an EH pedal. To truly unlock the awesomeness though, the expression pedal, is a must, especially if using the pitch changes, and transitioning from the synth sounds to more guitarish
