I'm not 100% whether they should be here or not but Soundgarden were pretty damn inventive. Incredible use of time signatures and tunings as well as a couple of great guitarists.

Also, how did Matt Bellamy make the list but Tom Morello didn't?!?!?

He's not on the list at the start though.

They fall under the general umbrella of progressive rock IMO.

Aw hell, this thread is too long to read (and it's so old I've probably posted before and don't remember).
But the initial post fails to mention ROXY MUSIC.

So I feel justified in posting my list of bands that I find innovative that MAY HAVE BEEN overlooked:

Ike Turner
Carl Perkins
Chuck Berry
Booker T & the MGs
The Pretty Things
The Monks
The Zombies
13th Floor Elevators
T Rex
****ney Rebel
Roxy Music
Kraftwerk
NEU!
The Cramps
Suicide
The Dead Boys
E.L.O.
Tom Waits
The Ruts
Bad Brains
D.R.I.
Jane's Addiction
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Grifters
Guided By Voices
The Dirtbombs/ /The Gories

Props go to whoever brought up Polvo. And I think people say "Wilco" they really mean "The Replacements"

BoyEcho was making a sarcastic joke about the fact that this thread was originally started by Guitargeek in 2004 as research for a project that has yet to materialise.

Since then however the original idea has long sice been forgotten and now people just read the title and add the names of random bands they think are innovative because they have an asymetric haircut...
