looking for a versatile phase?

Hi all. I've been looking at this site for years and I've finally mustered the courage to post!

I've got an old Ibanez PT909 phaser (narrow box, round rather than square switch) that's really great because its so versatile and I can dial a really wide range of sounds into it. However, there's an audible click when I stomp on the switch which gets on my nerves when my band plays live, + it's rather old and I think its time that it was 'retired'

Can anybody recommend a versatile phaser that I could replace it with? I'd like to be able to control depth as well as speed as a bare minimum (so not a Phase90), I'm looking to spend <£80, I'd be using it to add movement to my clean guitar parts rather than the distorted ones, and space on my pedalboard is fairly limited. I hope this is enough info? Many thanks.

The Quasar seems to have plenty of versatility, and they seem to be all the rage. I don't remember who makes 'em, but you can find 'em on the tonefactor site. Not too big either.

Hello Derek, and welcome!

I just wanted to mention that if all that you don't like about your phaser is the switch, you could purchase a loop pedal. Keeley makes one that is very slim. look here I know it's not as fun as a new phaser, but it would do the trick. The Mobius Feedback looper from Tonefactor can do the same, with an added feedback switch for noise. look here And with a phaser, you can get some great siren sounds that your bandmates will despise.

If you gotta have a new phaser, a PH-3 with an expression pedal might do the trick.

Happy hunting.

thanks for the replies!

inthesound: I think that the Quasar is too pricey (and too large) for me, even though it looks very tempting, + I'd have to have it shipped over to the UK.

grover: a true bypass looper is an excellent idea + I was actually thinking of building one with a feedback loop. It'd give me some cool sonic options... always a good thing!

Still, if I went for a new phaser (around the size of a Boss pedal), how does the PH3 compare with the Ibanez 7 series phasers? And are there any other alternatives?

I wish I could give you a comparision, but I haven't played with an Ibanez 7 series phaser. Perhaps someone else here has better insight on how the two compare.

As far as alternatives, DOD pedals are quite affordable and abundant, yet I can't think of one that would have the options you are looking for. They have made several over the years... let me get back to you on that. Cheers!

I'm not a big fan of Digitech, but the x-series hyper phase could be an alternative.

thanks to all for the advice - I listened to some soundclips as suggested and read some reviews on Harmony Central too.

My plan is to go for the Ibanez PH7 because it's cheapest (<£60)and I don't know how much I'd use the more esoteric sounds on the Boss PH3 / Ibanez PM7 / Digitech Hyperphase.

However, I'm also going to get a feedback/tb loop as per grover's suggestion so that I can make siren noises

I would suggest an Akai Intelliphase...look in to it, if you can find one. They are pretty cool and the soft/hard hold function is really cool.

I love soft subtle phase on clean parts. It adds a lot to the depth of a slow song. I don't really like it though when its standing way out and all crazy. You mentioned that you won't be playing really distorted w/ it....but is it gonna be really subtle?...If so you could maybe even look into some kind of uni-vibe styled pedal...just an idea.

I don't use phase a lot though so I've got a PH-2 that I'm looking to sell...check my sig!
