i can't speak for the Tube Zipper--i've never tried one--but as for the MuRF, i find that relegating it as a textural effect helps. find a couple patterns that you like and add them in with volume swells or back the mix off and use them to color arpeggios.

also, it couldn't hurt to get a tap tempo footswitch and play sequenced parts.

Hey thanks, i tried a tap tempo, makes it alot easier to play with. Do you own a MuRF? If so what pedals do you use with it? and what settings?

Thanks,
Alex

the other guitar player in my band uses one, but i kinda convinced him to get it (he's definitely the more textural of the two of us, and i knew he'd put it to great use). the rest of his pedalboard is listed in the link in my signature.

as far as settings go, i think he uses pattern 2A and 7B almost exclusively live. for recording, it's all over the map.

Hey mate,

I use one with my band Arrows

Have a listen to Windmill

New version has the MuRF set with a more choppy envelope setting and a faster rate, whereas the old one (bottom of the songs) has a slower rate, and a more swirly envelope.

Highjacking but do you reckon you could somehow mod the tap tempo footswitch to be triggerd by a bass drum, so I can synch it up with my drummer?

You're not going to want to do this. Stick to tapping in the tempo yourself. If you're drummer is wavering just wander over and re-sync ever so often with a few taps. For a lot of reasons sync'ing with a drummer's actual kick is a bad idea. High on the list is that few drummers actually place their kicks *on* the beat. It would feel pretty cold and sterile if all their kicks fell precisely on the beat. "Feel" is about moving it slightly to one side of the beat. Also high on the list is that they might not be giving you a 4 kicks per bar. Might be 2 in one, 1 in another, 3 after that. So you'd end up with the tempo entered arhythmically.

This is the downside to using tap tempo with continuous effects like tremolo. Unlike delay, where you tap in the tempo but ultimately control when the repeats happen by playing (or not playing), trem and the MuRF run continuously. So a slight mis-tap begins to get exaggerated over time. Really want you want to do is have the drummer play to your effect.

I remember that the manual had a lot of settings. Have you tried all of them? I tried the MuRF once, and it has a lot of features, so I understand your trouble in finding sounds (although I thought it sounded good and was very cool but was a little overpriced).

After having a long play with the MuRF, I think i've realised you have to be fairly subtle with the pedal, in order to texture and not totally alter your sound.
