my singers guitar tone sucks!

okay, i started playing with a band that sounds way too much like the cure. Seeing as it's only our 3rd rehersal, i'm impressed with the progress, so i'm sticking with it.

the singer, who sings way too much like robert smith, is a good songwriter, but his guitar tone sucks.
he uses digital floor multi-fx and uses a phasey delay setting on his acoustic guitar for every song. it gets real anoying real fast.

any advice on how to tastefully ween him off of these amature sounds?? without causing turmoil?
just curious.
Thanks.

Break into his house and steal all his gear, just hope he doesn't have Wild Guard Dogs.

actually, no. i'd go with 4 since its hard to find a good/new singer.

4 - Convince him to sing only, not play guitar..

having been in those sort of situations before, I'd say on depends on the persons ego. If their fairly egotistical, your in for a fight. If they take constructive criticism, just be honest with them and say "from a listening perspective your guitar tone doesn't blend in very well". If they just aren't getting the hint, say "turn that #$%!! off or quit playing guitar altogether! That's got to be the worst tone I've heard since poison hired cc deville!"

ya, I haven't taken any zoloft yet, so I'm a bit pissy today.

Well, tell him right out that needs some more tone options because it's getting a little old...

And as long as he's not a douche, he wont have any "Wild Mood Swings"

Have someone come by to hear your band and let them tell him his tone needs work. A girl maybe who knows nothing about guitars but what sounds she likes and dislikes. You know..."Everything sounds good except for your guitar dude" or something like that. Then you can just agree.

I have a similar problem. Our other guitarist and joint singer plays a beautiful Ric 330, but ruins it by putting it through on of those Zoom multi FX boxes, the 707 or summit.

Its such a nice guitar but he doesnt see the point in getting single effects. The Zoom things sounds are all really harsh and not pleasant on the ears. Though there are soem useable voices.

Sometimes though he makes it work and it sounds good with the band...but I want him to become a geek.

yeah. also since he writes alot, he plays through the whole songs, and that gets old fast. since the rest of the band is new, we don't yet have the clout to 'tell him what to do'. but everyone is on consensus on these issues..

if he went dry or didn't play at all, i think things would come out stronger for it...

"Hey man, you are SUCH a talented guitar player. You know what, though, you can hardly tell through that cheap effects box. The way you chord, man, it's brilliant, you should just let it ring it out dry, man, LET YOUR INNER LIGHT SHINE THROUGH."

This is a lead singer, right? Egotistical doesn't even begin to cover it. He'll eat this up.

Don't try this type of crap on a drummer; they are likely to hit you on the head with their sticks.

Singers shouldn't have guitars unless they're guitarists that can sing. Just my opinion. My band wanted me to play guitar and sing, but I suck so much at the guitar I need to focus on the lesser of two evils.

Here's my advice:

Since the band feels the same way, approach him as a group and tell him. Be honest but respectful. People have to reasonable if they are going to be part of a team.

If he bolts, maybe it was not meant to be. He may even leave, go think about it, and return later being more compromising.
