This thead has been VERY informative to me and I appreciate it very much. I understand that the key here is to play around and see what sounds best, but, I do have a couple of questions about placement in the effects chain.
1) First of all, I am running a hybrid of effects pedals and also some rack mounted gear. One thing I *think* I should do and that is minimize the runs of Long cables between the pedal board and the rack. Fewer the better, right? 2) That being said, There are a few items which, if there were some flexibility in placement I could remove some of these extra long wires in the chain and that is: Noise Gate: How important is the location of this? I have a rack mounted MXR Smart Gate. What would be the effect of placing this before the modulation effects (Flanger/Chorus)? If I can do that, it would remove ONE more LONG cord between rack and pedal board. Volume Pedal: This is supposed to be located between modulation (Flanger/Chorus) and time based effects (Delay/Echo). What would be the impact if it ran AFTER time based effects? For your reference here is a PDf of my signal chain: SignalChain.pdf Any comments or suggestions are much appreciated. |

The placement of the noise gate generally depends on what you consider 'excess' noise. For example, most people put their noise gates in front of their delay and reverb pedals so as not to cut off any repeats. (Some noise suppressors, such as the ISP noise decimator claim that they can be placed after delays without cutting off repeats, but I haven't tried one out for myself)
As for the volume pedal, a lot of people put them after their time-based effects so they can fade in or make some effects more pronounced.

What effect does the long signal cords have? If you run between the pedal board and the rack three times, you are talking about 6 LONG cords for back and forth. That must affect the system in some way? Is the degradation of the signal minimal?

Depends on the cord. High end cables like Planet Waves have little or no signal degradation at longer lengths

Hi guys - I have to say that this is my first time on this very cool website! I just read throught this entire thread and found it very useful. I do have a question about my rig, as follows:
1990 MIJ '59 Strat reissue Snarling Dog Blues Bawls Wah (I don't use the overdrive on this pedal, just wah) Boss DD5 Digital Delay Line 6 Pod XT '79 Fender Deluxe reverb amp I mainly use the Pod for it's amp modelling, that is, I don't really use any of its effects (other than reverb) -- so should it be last in my chain? I do use the amp overdrive on the Pod, but not any of the stompbox models in it. So I guess, in effect, I'm using my Pod as a pre-amp? Any suggestions as to how to work the Pod in with my pedals would be very much appreciated. Cheers! |

hi all. noob here.....
this is my setup: fender fat strat boss DS 1 EH Big Muff Vox V847 Wah Boss CH-1 Super Chorus VOX AD30VT I'm really confused about people having the Wah before the distortion. I've tried it and I feel like the wah isn't heard enough with distortion. Maybe it's my wah? |

Nothing groundbreaking here, although I do put phaser before distortion to get some nice chewy texture out of the PH-2. I like how distortion wreaks havoc on phased chords. Fun!

Here will be my pedal list: Digitech Whammy 4 Reissue Vox modded Wah Boss NS-2 Noise supressor boss mt-2 metal zone planet waves chromatic stage tuner line 6 echo park delay mxr EVH phase 90 mxr 10 band equalizer I have a marshall JCM 2000 Series TSL 100 Watt half stack w/ effects loop aswell. I would appreciate any input on what should go where before i start messing around too much. Thanks |

Does anyone else prefer wah AFTER distortion?
If i have wah before distortion on my bass, when I wah you can hardly hear anything happening, whereas if it's after the distortion pedal I get a much better sound. Just my 2p anyway.

order of effects pedals??
hello all. i really could use your help. i have a number of effects pedals and i don't know the best order to put my pedals in, especially to get the best sounds out of them and little or no hum/hiss etc. so please give me some advice. thank you very much.
guitars: mexican fender nashville tele, PRS CE24, old ibanez RG series i have a mesa boogie dual rectifier (the older one with only 2 channels), boss gt-6 effects processor which i use for a nicer clean channel (my amp is way to bassy even with the bass rolled off) and reverbs/other effects. i mainly use my single effects pedals for coloring the sound, boosting etc. for single effects pedals i have: cry baby wah mxr phase 90 mxr micro amp boss delay dm-2 boss super phaser ph-2 boss flanger bf-2 boss distortion ds-1 boss metal zone mt-2 boss blues driver bd-2 boss tremolo tr-2 and i power everything except my boss gt-6 with a "1 spot" 9VDC adapter i hope someone can help me out, thank you. josh |

So here's my rig, for those interested...
Stripped Paint and refinished wood oil Ibanez RG 550 with SD pickups - Uber customized Fender Tele > Morley Bad Horsie 2 (stripped paint and quick bypass modded) > MXR Dyna Comp (block logo) > Boss TU-2 Tuner > Boss 1983 DM2 Delay (with DM3 knobs?) > Boss DS1 (indyguitarist vintage mod, blue light) > Ibanez TS9 reissue (analogman 808 mod) > Ibanez TL5 Tremolo > Boss PH-2 > Modded inside and out Behringer Vintage Tube Overdrive (TS9 clone with JRC chip) > Boss DD-6 Delay > Ibanez DL5 delay (analog and infinite repeats mod by indyguitarist) > (MY AMP) Fender Hot Rod Deluxe w/ preamp volume box. So the pedals go: wah, tuner, comp, delay, OD, OD, Trem, Phase, OD, Delay, Delay. Pics available upon reguest. |
