Op Amps - TL022CP
Last night I was messing around with some stuff and rearranging when I found a few TL022CP op amps that I believe I took out of my mid-80s Boss GE7 when I modded it a while ago. Anyway, on a whim I tried one of them in my Barber Direct Drive just to see if I could notice a difference. The Barber has a socket and although I love it, I've found that as the gain in increased, so is the harshness (maybe it's a single coil thing). Anyway, I noticed a difference right away. The Direct Drive sounded warmer and not quite as harsh, even on lower gain settings. Although it does sound like it has a little less gain when dimed. It had a JRC4558D in it originally. Anyway, anyone know anything about the TL022CP? I know I bought my GE7 in the mid 80s and it was stock until recently. So I'm sure this is a mid-80s chip. It's got a TI logo on the front and says "JAPAN" on the back. Supposedly it made the GE7 noisy. I do notice less noise since doing the GE7 mod, but didn't notice any significant noise from the Direct Drive with the TL022CP in it. So the noise from the GE7 was likely a combination of other things that were also changed. Is this just a junk chip or did I happen across something decent?

It is probably because of what the chip was used for in the eq context, a lot of noise comes from the bad quality caps they use too. If you are feeling adventurous, heres some chips I tried in my SD-1;

They are just old.......
They were the older versions of the todays so much used TL072 which have less noise issues. They are just old; I generally replace em with TL072. Try some TL072's in the Barber and see if you can spot the difference. The 4558 chip inside it just has that little mid notch, the TL072 is a bit more lineair.
