Overdrive/Distortion Theory

So bear with me...

Amplifiers get their overdrive by having X amount of stages... Marshalls have 3, 5150s have 6? (I'm trying to remember what I read in guitar world).

So, the question is this: Wouldn't it theorhetically make more sense to line up 3 or 4 distortion boxes of the same type each set with low gain, as opposed to having one set to high gain? It'd be cost-prohibitive, and a pain in the ass too, but still, what do you think would happen?

How do you who cascade do it? I myself cascade a Sobbat Drive Breaker into a Sobbat Fuzz Breaker--essentially Tube Screamer into Fuzz Face

That depends on what type of distortion sound you're looking for. If you want a super massive distortion sound that an amp with five or six preamp tubes would give, then yes. Go for the line of distortion pedals for a cost effective route. That's what Dimebag did when he was younger and couldn't afford his own custom line of amplifiers.

If you want a smooth delivery of tube break up with discernable characteristics, look to an innexpencive tube amp with a low wattage you can crank higher for a hotter sound at lower volumes.

Or look for someplace that carries any of the effect pedals build on a tube circuit and see what you think.

Preamps;

Then some poweramp OD that also colors the signal

And rectifier influences......

Not only the preamp makes the sound!

Then; dirt boxes does work different then amps...... OK, maybe multiple OD boxes, set for volume boost could, when combined, get the same effect, but things like fuzzes, distortions and OD units usually work by clipping emulating the RESULTING signal of the amp........

adding multiple clipping stages would only change the signal to non-amp modes

Well aware of that. I just figured it would be easier to emulate preamp clipping for what he wanted rather than the job poweramp tubes have.

I've done this in NI's guitar rig 2. I lined up like 6 tube screams all set for very low drive. It wasn't what I was expecting but it sounded amazing. It's the closest I'm come to infinite sustain without an ebow!

Yeah. That's more-or-less what I'm looking for. I play an Epiphone Sheraton, so I want a hollowbody that'll sustain for as long as I'd like to without absolutely insane amounts of gain from one box.

It depends very strongly on the pedals and the amp.

First of all, all gain boxes work very differently with different amps.

Take the MXR D+. A pedal that works great with most amps, but when you get super high wattage clean mosters like twins, it gets really nasty. With low wattage amps or slightly gritty amps, the pedal is very rich.

Then take a pedal like a big muff. Sounds great with a super clean amp. Sounds even better with a touch of grit. However, push any amp past mild overdrive and it starts getting mushy.

The biggest problem to me seems like it would be noise. Cascading gain stages on pedals seems to lend itself to a bit more hiss and hum, epecially with single coils.

That being said, I currently have 2 gain stages used at all times on my amp, and then 3 gain pedals (Micro synth, Hyper lead, D+). And I use them in all combinations.

. . . Billy F Gibbons (ZZ TOP) does the same with his Expandoras !

He has SIX Expandora's running at the same time !

To a lesser extreme, my cousin's set-up uses TWO TS9's !

Guitar -->TS9 -->TS9 -->10Band EQ -->5150 Combo
