Arrow potentiometer question.

so, a pot has 3 lugs.
this is what i know so far..

a potentiometer is nothing more than a resistor that can change its value. The max value being the label on the pot (i.e. 500k).

Now, for a resistor.. it doesn't matter what way you put it in. you can flip it or flop it and it wont matter.
Is this true for pots? Can i just choose any 2 random lugs and have it work? or are there specified "input" "output" lugs.

Also, i know that if all 3 lugs are used.. it acts as a voltage divider. Same question here.. what lug does what. In this case, i'm sure it matters what lug i solder to.

Anyone know? berarduur? =]

thanks in advance.

berarduur is on a distinguished road
Don't see a potmeter as one resistor
See it as two

Two resistors facing each other connecting on one point. That coinnecting point is the middle lug

When you sweep a potmeter you increase the resistance between lug 1 and middle AND at the same time decrease the resistance between lug 3 and middle

As for your questions:
- There is no in or output lug; it is dependent on the circuit on how the pot is used.
- It matters on which potlugs you use when working with LOG or ANTILOG pots; lin pots will behave the same (as will add a substract the same amount of resistance with each turn)
- The voltage divider is just a way to use a potmeter.
