radiohead distortion
what kind of pedal can give me a good radiohead distortion(ex. creep, the bends etc.)
i know they use marshall shredmasters, but i heard theirs were modded. is there any other pedal that can give me this type of distortion? thanks a lot. p.s. the amp i will be using is a vox ac30tbx |

hmm...
try the newer marshall jackhammer. from what i understand, it's a revamped shredmaster. with some tweaking it should get you into "the bends" territory

I am not interested in sounding like radiohead but I am interested in one thing. The Kackink! Kackink! sound in creep before the distortion really comes in... It is Jonny greenwood doing something with his guitar... I think that is the sickest sound I have ever heard. If anyone knows how to make that sound I would loke to know so I could blow my metal loving friends out of the water.

yes jonnys is modded, i think its modded for twice the normal gain, but i ahev a shredmaster i think it has plenty of gain a power to produce radiohead distortion, i use a twin reverb and it can get bends sounds and pretty all of thier album sounds...

as seen on the low (great freaking band) webpage:
"For instance, while Johnny plays some stuff using effects on a laptop and expensive hand-built analog modular synth filters, he also gets his famous crunchy guitar sound from a small solid-state practice amp and a cheap distortion pedal - yes, the world famous "KA-CHUNK" on "Creep" can be yours at the local pawn shop, not the fancy vintage, expensive, tone-guru equipment boutique. " there ya go.

Thanks.. I guess I need to find a super gain pedal, and pull that old frontman out of the closet.

The settings on the Shredmaster are all important!
Full Volume No bass Contour nearly all the way round (backed off just a little) Full treble Full Gain Johnny also uses quite thin picks (Dunlop Nylon .66s I think) so that's why he gets away with bashing the hell out of the strings. I agree that an unmodded Shredmaster can sound very much like Johnny. The most overlooked part is the fact he uses dual red lace sensors in the bridge which makes a hell of a difference as they are stupidly high gain. err what was the question again?

yuo can get the tone out the shredmaster easily
jonny's tone is all about his guitar tho. fender telecaster plus which has dual red fender lace sensors at the bridge and a blue lace sensor at the neck. i have both this guitar (which is a pretty rare thing to find these days, although jons has the cut off switch added) and the shredmaster and can get all his distortion sounds easily. the crucnchy sound is not a cheap distortion, but definetley a shredmaster. its all about the pick ups as the fender lace sensors have a huge gain, and the dual red sensors forming a humbucker is a distortion from hell! the big osund in creep is muting all the strings at the first fret and whacking them hard as hell. a jackhammer will get you close on the o/d setting, but the dist setting is useless. thats why i sold mine. a marshall amp can get you a simliar sound to a shredmaster, but wont give you the sustain of a shredmaster and is slightly more 'fizzier' rats are used by thom and ed, i dont think jon used one but could be wrong. jon also uses a fender twin reverb for all his dirty sounds and a vox for his clean sound (i think if memeory serves). its very difficult to get the exact sound without having the same gear.

I have owned several overdrive/distortion pedals in the past, trying to capture the radiohead distorted sound.
After a while, i got bored of doing that, but started to find my own sounds and material. BUT... ProCo Rats can't be beaten

I remember Colin (i think) say in an interview in Melody maker in 1993 that the guitar sound in creep was a tiny 10w amp turned up to max, miked up into a Marshall. This monster guitar sound was just a rubbish pawnshop amp.
I do similar things by plugging two 2 inch walkman speakers into the headphone socket of my amp, and then turning up the amp until the tiny speakers start smoking. You have to get the volume just right so they don't actually blow. Then you mike up the walkman speakers. Lofi tastic. |

for the kind of spacial rock that radiohead dabble with, but more for a shoegazer thing, do you think the rat in the one to get? how do they compare to shredmasters? what about big muffs, do they compare to a shredmaster or a rat?
