hiwatt has a pretty cool, inexpensive one. you can adjust the frequency range and it's also got onboard delay. you can find it here:

Moog's theremin is awesome. Days of fun. Not in your price range though.

I remember hearing they can be cheap as hell if you build one. Look into that, if you're any good with building things... I believer there was a thread about it a month or so ago.

You sir are looking at the crappy theremin price bracket. I have a theremin player in my band and his almost okay theremin was $500.

there's a really crappy demo up at our myspace.

My Etherwave cost me £150 (british pounds) and is indentical to the Moog model.

It was designed by Bob Moog and built by his "Big Bryher" company, before he was able to re-use his own name. It was available in kit form - maybe it still is.

As noted elsewhere, you get a DVD featuring Theremin's own great niece Lydia Karvina (sp?) giving playing and set up hints. Also in the pack was Clara's CD of theremin classic playing from earlier in the 20th Century. Mainly classics from the Cello and Violin repetoire stunningly played by a true master. Thermins are easy to mess around with but fearsomely difficult to play well. Clara's playing is as good as ever achieved on this instrument, but Lydia Karvina is probably the new master but not yet at her standard..

Any theremin that costs less than $250 will be rubbish. You basically play it by wiggling a finger and it's imposible to "play" a tune on it. It depends what you want. If you want to use it for one song, have some fun and make some theremin ish noises just buy a cheap one.

If you want to play it as an instrument in a serious way you'll have to get a moog or similar. As people said - kits are much cheaper.
