Hey hey.
I'm planning to buy a TS808, as I'm a huge Stevie Ray fan, but I know that the reissue TS808s tend to have a mellow overdrive sound rather than a screaming blues sound. I'm have no problem with that, I adore SRV's tone, but I like a bit of a boost for the solos. So should I buy another tube screamer and use two, like Stevie Ray's rig, or buy a boost pedal? I'd be using my SRV Custom Strat through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

Keeley can mod your reissue to original specs
www.robertkeeley.com however, a cheaper option with almost exactly the same results would be to buy a boss sd-1 and get it modded. I believe all modders do this mod (generally called the sd-808 mod). Your best bet for the money would be monte-allums mod at www.monteallums.com/product_links.html. Get the DIY kit for 20 bucks or send it in for 35 bucks \m/

Hmm, sounds interesting 'n all, but I live in the UK
Is it really worth the extra cash? Anyway ya sorta missed the point of my question; I want the mellow overdrive of the TS808 but at the same time I want some fat overdrive for solos. Do I buy a second TS808 like SRV had and use that to add some beef, or just buy a boost pedal?

If you want to sound exactly like SRV, you'll need two of them.

Maybe a Fulltone Full-Drive II. It is based off the TS808 circut but can go above and beyond! Two channels too but the second channel is just a boost off the first.
I have a Strat--> FDII--> Blues Jr. and it nails the SRV tone and can even get a little dirtier!

Whoa. Wait a second here. I'm going to disspell most of your 'SRV tone quest' questions right now. I've seen too many of these threads floating around and I just want to say a few things about this elusive tone
. On the first album that he did (Texas Flood), you're hearing lots of two set ups: a. Stevie with various Fender Blackface amps (Vibroverb, Super Reverb) and a Tube Screamer and b. Stevie with an illustrious Dumble amp head without a tubescreamer. Also on this record there are a few spots where he employed a Roland Digital Chorus/Delay unit, post production. You can hear this on 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' 's solo. It's faint, but it's there. Then he moved on to using just Dumbles and he actually used Marshalls too. He used a 1959 Bassman all over his later albums as well as the Marshalls and Blackfaced Fenders like previously mentioned. Most of his tone came from his amps. That's all I'm really trying to say. Some good speakers in a good Fender Blackface reiusse or original are gonna totally make a difference. I thought it was a tubescreamer too, but I had to spend about 3 years how he made this little pedal sound like it had a real tube in it. And then I cranked up a Blackfaced Pro Reverb with replacement speakers in it and I was pretty much set. Sorry, I figured someone wouled find this handy. I'm just bitter about my tone quest that I had. ![]() Travis |
