Which Tubescreamer should I get?

I am deciding between a TS-9 and a TS-808 (the reissue of course.) I am slightly in favor of the TS-9 because I can get it modded to sound like the TS-808. Plus, I know Tom Petty uses it and he has a great tone and probably the reason I'm getting one is to get slightly overdriven sounds like he has. I know there's alot of threads like this but some help is appreciated.

My personal fav is the Maxon OD-808 modified. Bang for the buck I would go with the TS-9, and get it modified. To me the RI TS-808 is a waste of money. You get the same thing with the TS-9, or maxon OD-9. (which is true bypass!) All you're really paying for in RI is the vintage looking case.

Cheers!
Kevin

Tom Petty is probaly using an older TS9/808 with the JRC4558 chip.

That chip makes the the pedal a lot smoother.

Now, to your question...I would say go ahead and just get the 808 reissue. Save yourself time and money...unless you can get a used TS9 for a good price - then send that to get modified.

That's what i think.

But you will be happy with either.

The only problem I have with getting the 808 RI is the tone. I have only played a simulated tubescreamer through Guitarport, and I noticed the tone knob doesn't really do much: the pedal is usually too mid rangey/high end. I don't want to get a brand new $180 TS-808 and then spend another $60 getting it modded. So with that in mind, anybody else have any suggestions? I'm really only looking at the TS-9/808, and again looking for that Petty sound.

like I said, I'm only really interested in an IBANEZ TS-9/TS-808.

Have you played both of the ts's yet? I'm quite content with the TS-9 for its more aggressive sound. SRV even said in an interview that he liked the TS-9 for all the extra dirt it gave. Don't forget to consider getting a used one. Hell, you can get a used Boss SD-1 and have it modded to 808 specs. Just an idea...

If there was a Doobtone TS-9 on EBay I would hve put that as an example. Sorry, I thought you had some skill in extrapolating.

i know you are looking at a TS-9/808 adam, but i think you should check out the voodoo labs sparkledrive.
it's in between the 9 and the 808 pricewise, but it copies the 808 circuitry, upgrades the parts AND is true bypass.
with the clean blend knob you can get that slightly-dirty sound, or just a straight up clean boost.

just a suggestion for an alternative.

why limit yourself to just ibanez
i say go for Maxon and have it modded by Kevin.
the maxon is better than the ibanez straight up and Kevin will make it great. plus....there are a gabillion tube screamer "clones" than will sound better than anything that rolls out of the Ibanez factory.

I'm gonna go with a TS-9 Mod Plus, get it modded by Keeley. I kind of like the TS-9 case better...the switch seems easier to operate, etc.

Forget all of these silly green pedals.

The MJM Blues Devil is, without a doubt, the best TS type pedal made right now...and probably EVER! It's got hte tone of an original 808 and it's true bypass. I've been through about 10 different OD pedals and most of them have been TS based pedals. The MJM is going nowhere. It's staying on my board. It might be a hair more expensive but I'm not sure what the others are selling for. I've seen them on ebay and HC for around $125. It absolutely can not be beat for that or any price.
