i say the Ernie Ball VP-JR. It's a great pedal, it's smaller footprint not terribly pricey, built like a tank and all volume pedals do the same thing so...I say pick one up.

if you can find it for cheap, i'd recommend a look at the morleys. i have their pro series volume pedal, and it works splendidly. granted, it is active and requires power, so that could be a detracting point depending on what you're looking for. the ernie ball is a great passive one; the wire is pretty durable and should last a fair while before you notice any problems

I haven't played those Dunlops but if they're like their wahs I wouldn't choose them because of their limited sweep. I do have an Ernie Ball which is fine except for something you have to look out for: when you place it in it's quietest position and take your foot off it, it should be completely silenced but mine lets a little volume through, which is noticable when you play a loud amp. It is fixable when you replace the rubber on the heel down position with something smaller.

If you can swing it, the Goodrich Volume is the best one that I've iused. Almost every Nashville steel player has one in their rig.

Completely Transparent

Shouldn't they all be transperant? I mean their isn't a lot of circuitry in there.

In theory yes, but I had a Dunlop Volume pedal back in the day that sounded scratchy and that put a bad taste in my mouth. I've been very happy with the Goodrich. I can't speak for Morely, or Ernie Ball, as I haven't tried them, but I do know that they make quality products.

Agreed.

You could also check out morley, they have rhythm/lead options. only downside is that morley pedals need to be powered.

The Boss FV-300H has some fans around here. Personally I think the VP Jr. is worth it just because its the smallest one out there, but I had an old full size one and there was noticeable tone suckage. It really depends on where you place it and whether its a high impedance or low impedance pedal.

Berarduur posted this a while back when I was looking for a volume pedal, very helpful :

"The High impedance volume pedal was made to be used between guitar and amp (as the guitar puts out a high impedance) or between guitar and pedals. You can use it between pedals without any tone loss! There are theoretically reasons why it should not work but I think you won't hear the difference.

The Low impedance volume pedal was made to be used with low impedance instruments (like organs and such) or to be used after a buffered pedal (as a buffer turns the high impedance load of the guitar into a low impedance load). Using a low impedance pedal between guitar and amp will result in serious tone loss as the main load won't add up.
On TB pedals; when the pedal is off, the load is just passed through. When the pedal is on the load after the pedal will be low."

I was just about to suggest that! +1, a great volume pedal if you have the money.

Otherwise, Boss is a good option.

You can fix that without replacing the rubber on the heel -- there's a string that turns the pot on the EB pedal. It's just not turning it far enough in the toe-up position to silence things. All You need to do is slacken the string-spring on the pot shaft and roll the pot back a little more then tighten it all up. I'm pretty sure they go through this on the EB site. It's part of the calibration you have to do when you replace the string-spring mechanism.

Great pedal. The buffer in it is superb.
