Wah vs. Whammy
Whats the difference between a wah pedal and whammy pedal?

wah = bandpass filter
whammy = pitchshifter a wah is essentially a bandpass filter (think of it as a filter that kills everything higher than a certian point, but also kills everything lower than another point)... rocking it back and forth changes the position of the band it allows to pass through. the whammy is a digital pitchshifter. what is the difference? they're different effects.

A wah goes "wah wah wah" and a Whammy does not go "whammy whammy whammy".

Depending on what you play and how often you use the effects, I'd go for two dedicated units. I haven't used the xp-100, but from what I can gather the wah isn't the best. I have a Digitech RP-12, and the wah on that is -extremely- weak. I'm sure the xp's is better, but if you're going to be playing a good amount of funk and believe that the wah will be an important part of your sound, I would go for a dedicated wah pedal - Vox, Crybaby, Morley, etc.
For me, a Whammy is something you use sporadically. Maybe you're covering Radiohead, maybe you want to do Tom Morello solos, and maybe you really found a way to use it somewhat frequently (octave-up effects can be very nice). If you feel you'll use it quite frequently, you might want to look into a WH-4 whammy reissue; I think you can get them for around $150. Between that and some type of wah (crybaby?) you will end up spending more, but you'll be able to put them at different parts in your signal chain and they'll (most likely) sound better. That said, if you want to start with whammy, the XP100 might fit you... you can use its wah until you have the money and desire to get a better wah pedal. Or perhaps it will fit the bill nicely; I'll leave that to the XP100 owners to suggest. |

the best whammy usage ive heared is either My Vitriol or Billy corgan! My Vitriol i dont think could play over half there songs without it!
