is this a problem with my mic?

well, when i record directly in, i get the guitar sound, sounds good enough, but everytime i record with a mic, it has the guitar sound, sounds less than good, then the guitar goes into this wooooshoowww and stays on the ooowww for the rest of the time. kinda like if you put a seashell on your ear, with guitar tone in the mix. I know i need a mixer before I plug into the computer, but would a new mic help this too? Also, the mic im using is one of those crappy mics from target, the computer mics.

Short answer: The mic sucks.

Long answer: Them mic sucks and depending on your sound card and pc configuration, a new mic might not do much better. However, you should get a SM57 and mic that baby up and see how she sounds. My guess, your recorded sound will improve. Mic'ing is better than DI 99.9999% of the time.

Nothing that I've really used. You could try going with a cheaper dynamic mic, but you're results may vary. The bare minimum I use when recording electric guitar is an SM57, and sometimes I'll even use that and a condensor to beef up the sound.

At this point, anything is most likely going to be better than the PC mic. If you can find a cheap AKG dynamic vocal mic for $30 or $40 at guitar center or something, you can give that a try.

Don't assume an SM57 is your instant path to recording good guitar sounds... personally, I do this when I need something fast and simple, but for serious recording, I usually involve other mics.

Check out http://www.musicplayers.com/tutorial...king_part1.php if you want to start learning about recording good guitar tones -- it's a great primer on the subject.
