John's pedalboardtowel
Well I'll do my best to keep this updated. This is what's on my floor today:
Fender Stratocaster Fender Jazzmaster Gibson ES-333 Boss TU-2 Electro Harmonix Graphic Fuzz Fender '65 Twin Reverb Reissue. Pictures! I usually keep all the pedals on beach towels (or shoebox lids, depending on the size of my setup) because I read somewhere that Eric Johnson insists on keeping his pedals mounted on a certain type of wood because he thinks that the surface the rubber feet touch has a significant impact on his tone. I don't know if the story is true or not, but I thought it was really funny so I looked for something ridiculous to put my pedals on so I could insist it makes a significant difference in my tone. I swear, it makes me sound way better! Last edited by Johnny the Boy; 10.23.08 at 10:26 AM. |

Yeah, I hear ya on the EHX pedal thing. They're great and I don't realize how many I have either (or had) until I looked at my board.
Nice pedalboard, I dig it's simplicity.

OMG thats soooo ridiculous, i wonder if he really mean it or he was joking cause obviously that doesnt have anything to do with the tone!!!maybe if you put them on a hot BBQ grill or on water but certain types of wood?? c'mon!!!

EDIT/UPDATE: Today, I bought two Tom Waits albums and downloaded a few Cramps records, and after some long listening and careful deliberation, replaced the Polychorus with a Deluxe Memory Man and changed the settings on all of my fuzzes. I can absolutely nail everything from shoegaze, noise rock and stoner metal to surf, rockabilly, and spaghetti western with this set up, so it should last a few days at least. sweet gear! I want a flanger hoax, but i wanna know if its versatile, or if its just a one trick pony. How do you use it? Mostly for oscillating fun, or can it do more traditional stuff? not that oscillating is bad, i just really cant justify the space of two flange units on my board.

Update: March 3, 2008.
I took the Big Muff off. I like the way it sounds through a dirty amp, but through the Twin, it was just too... I don't know. Something wasn't right. I think most fuzz sounds best when it's run into an overdriven amp or a good overdrive pedal, so I put my trusty MXR Doubleshot back on board. It actually sounds pretty good as a really light overdrive, and the '69 really rips through either channel. Also, it's nice to have TWO overdrives in such a (relatively) small box (one is set as a treble booster with a bit more drive, the other is mid scooped and I have to really dig in to make it clip). My main reason for disliking this pedal as an overdrive is that neither channel is at all transparent, so there is a noticeable difference whenever I turn it on, even though I have to pick pretty hard to make it clip. Oh well, I still like it. As for the Hoax, it's great. I wouldn't call it a one trick pony by any means, but I think it's versatility is actually it's greatest downfall. It's really, really hard to duplicate settings, and the learning curve is pretty steep, even if you understand the science behind phasing and flanging. I think that it's definitely worth it and I love mine, but be prepared for some frustrations when you get a deep and disruptive pitch warble in the middle of the sweep, or find that the phaser tends to cut out ALL of your treble and mids at the bottom, but then cuts out all the mids and lows at the top. If that sounds neat, trust me - it's not. It's actually so extreme that it just makes you worry about your speakers. Of course, these are all easy problems to avoid, but the challenge lies in finding the method to avoid them. There's alot of blind knob twiddling involved. I mostly use mine for a 'typical' flange, but the phasers add an ultra gorgeous dimension to a clean guitar that I have yet to hear from any other flanger. The 'Through Zero' settings are fun and I use them quite a bit, but most of the time I keep it dialed to a more tapered sweep. The oscillation is only 'traditional' on some settings, most of the time it is an assortment of odd, intermittent chirping and rumbling. It's totally killer. As for worrying about justifying having a second flanger: I would actually suggest having two on your board, at least until you know the Hoax inside and out. I can give you some tricks that I've found if you end up getting one. Last edited by Johnny the Boy; 03.05.08 at 9:51 PM. |

That acoustic is awesome! What gauge strings do you have on it? I've found that 10s give an awesome ratty vibe to an old crappy acoustic. But if it already sounds lo-fi, the thin strings might make it go over the top.

I upgraded to 12's on my Strat on a whim one day and as such had an extra pack of 11's laying around, so I put those on. It's a definite improvement - the guitar is now playable - but it is still way too loose. Like, the sound is so buzzy, it's almost lo-fi to the point of being just plain irritating. The problem is that it's a short-scale guitar and the frets, bridge and nut have all seen better days. I probably need 12's or 13's on it to get a decent string tension, and the guitar definitely needs a refretting, a new nut and a new bridge to allow the strings sit properly and minimize fret buzz, but I am hesitant to have any work done on it because of how old it is. The good news is that I finally fixed my cassette recorder. Hooray! Last edited by Johnny the Boy; 03.11.08 at 6:52 PM. |

This rig... is really cool. I could have a lot of fun with it I think.
Oh and a big ROTFLMAO to the Eric Johnson pedal thing. That's easily the stupidest thing I've heard all day... and I watched Fox news earlier!
