MIDI Footswitching
Who here does any MIDI footswitching for their amp and their effects? I'm looking to get into it. I am tired of having a HUGE footprint when setting up my effects, and amp footswitch, drinks getting spilled on pedals, mic stand not in a comfortable place, ran out of room on my pedal board so now I have extra pedals I carry in a bag I need to set up every time, signal and power cords maybe coming undone, having to run 6 cables back and forth between my amp and effects (guitar in, guitar out, loop send, loop return, amp footswitch, power). I just want to clean it up. I want to know what some other guys are using for putting their effects in a rack, and just a MIDI foot controller in front of them to change channels on their amp and effects on/off.
Here's what I run for a rig: Axe: (most common) -Ernie Ball Music Man Axis -Framus Diablo Custom Amp: Mesa Boogie Road King Series I Effects/Misc: -Shure SLX Wireless -Morpheus Drop Tune -MXR Dyna Comp -Boss TU2 -Digitech Multi Chorus -MXR EVH Phase 90 -MXR EVH Flange -Dunlop 535Q Wah -Ernie Ball Volume Loop: -Rocktron Super Hush -Boss Tremolo -TC Electronic Nova Delay I am willing to change effects. Like my delay, I want a tap tempo delay and that's why I have the Nova Delay. I know once I rack my effects, I wont be able to control the tap function, so I would need a different Delay module. Just seeing what you guys have, or what you would suggest for me. Thanks! |

I think the most common solution used by pros is a Voodoo Lab GCX Audio switcher paired with a GCX Ground control.
This way you can have all your pedals in a rack with closets and control them with the gcx, also i'm pretty sure it can handle midi as well. It's not cheap btw, and you'll have to purchase a big rack plus all the power distribution for the thing, you will have to carry your rack on stage, in your car, etc. Personally I have a midione flx 9 to control my effects and my amp. I don't use any midi multi effects though but the flx 9 can control them if I'll have the need in the future. I still use a pedalboard though. I use: Peavey 5150 mkII Engl cab w. Celestion V60 Korg tuner (don't remember the model) Big Muff (russian) Dunlop Cry Baby wha Then controlled by the midione: Boss ce-2 jap Boss bf-2 black knobs jap Ehx small stone Boss tr-2 Ehx screaming bird Ehx deluxe memory man Boss dd-3 Boss dd-20 I use a midione loop for the mods, one for the delays and one for the screaming bird. Still have two loops available, looking forward to Ehx superego or a pog 2 and maybe a cathedral.

I used to use a an all-in-one loop/midi/switcher thing from Loopholic. It was like a GCX and Ground Control Pro in one...all there on the board. Kind of. Plus it did MIDI PC and CC transmission for switching patches on things. I built a control box for my Koch so that I could switch channels on the amp with it too.
The all-in-one approach can be a little easier for the non-rack person to wrap their head around. There are companies like Musicom Labs making hella cool all-in-one programmable loopers now too. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/870088/pict...edalboarde.jpg
