Rushfans Rig

Home Rig modeled after Alex Lifesons early 80s Rig

Guitars
1980's Yamaha SE-150 loaded with EMG's and an Ibanez Edge Term.

2007 Squire Strat Alex Lifesonized - Gibson humbucker, real fender single coils, three way switch (B-M-N) with one volume and one tone knob.

Yamaha SE700e with a Bill Lawrence L500L and Bill Lawrence single coils - 5 position switch and an Ibanez Edge Trem.

Also use an Epi Dot Deluxe bought in 2002. Awesome Guitar. It is slowly becoming my main Axe. I'm currently building a third Yamaha Se series guitar.

Fun Amps
1950's Gibson Amp that I got from my Dad. I love this little amp. I hope to experiment with it more in the near future.

Rig Amps
These are amps I use. I use two Marshall 4140 Club and Country Combo amps for my main stereo image. I can't say enough about these amps. I love them. I use the Peavey Classic 30 Combo running through the Yamaha 2x12 cabinet, with a Yamaha FX500 effects processor in front of it, in a few different ways. I use it as my clean amp (switch from the 2 marshalls to the PV) or I use it with the two marshalls with the ability to volume pedal blend the two signal paths together.

Effects
Here is my pedal board.

All cables are George L's with the exception of the Hosa stereo patch cables needed to fully utilize the stereo options available within the combinator 2. The combinator is an invaluable tool. I really love it.

My signal path is:

Guitar--> LS-2 input-->Output A goes to the Combinator 2 input. Output B goes to the Yamaha FX500 input and then off to the PV combo and 2x12 cabinet. Combinator Loops are as follows:

Korg D-10 Tuner
Loop 1 = Vintage MXR Dyna Comp
Loop 2 = Vintage MXR Micro Amp
Loop 3 = Vintage MXR D+
Loop 4 = Vintage EH Deluxe Electric Mistress
Loop 5 = Sniper Modded Ge-7
Loop 6 + Maxon AD900 Analog Delay
Loop 7 = Vintage Boss CE-1 Stereo Chorus (stereo outputs to loop 8)
Loop 8 = Boss DD-20 Giga Delay

Loop A of the LS-2 contains a Vintage Morley Volume/Wah Pedal and sometimes, a crybaby too. I use this as my main loop that sends the signal to the combinator and the 2 marshalls. When I switch to loop B, I'm running to the FX500 and PV signal path. Set the LS-2 to A+B-Bypass and I can now combine the two signal paths and volume pedal the 2 marshalls.

My current set-up is really very versatile and can be used for more than Rush stuff but it rarely is. I've learned that I have to adjust the level on the Chorus pedal when using different guitars. Anyone who has owned a CE-1 will tell you that the level knob becomes a very important part of your rig even when the effect is not engaged. When I use the high output pickups (EMGs and Bill Lawrence) I have to back off the chorus level and up the intensity a little. It's the exact opposite with the Gibson Humbuckers.

I can honestly say that I am extremely happy with this rig. The only change I am even considering is relacing the Sniper EQ with another Sniper modded EQ, the Sniper PQ-4 (hang in there motorhead. I want it for sure).

Away Rig used for the classic rock band I play in on the weekends called Hans Gruber

Still working on getting pics for this rig.

Guitars

***same as above*** Because it's classic rock stuff (Tom Petty, ZZ-Top, Bad Company, CCR, Eagles, U2, Black Crows, Zep, etc) I end up using the Gibson humbucker guitars more often: The Dot and the Squire Strat are the main players and then when I need to be able to whammy bar to hell and back ( for example, Bullet the Blue Sky by U2) I use the Rushfan Signature Yamaha.

Amp and Cab

I use a Peavey Classic 30 Head ( I stick with what works for me) running through a RedBear 4x12 cab loaded with G12T-75 Celestians. I get great punch out of this combo and it's plenty loud in a 15'x15' living room with a heavy handed drummer, two other guitarists and a bass player. I do have to boost myself for solos to be heard but more on that in the effects section.

Effects

My pedal board starts with a TU-2 then goes of to a Boss CE-1->Boss PQ-4->Ibanez FL-9->Boss DD-3. Everything is powered by a DC Brick and I use my original Pedalpad pedal board. I use the amp and my volume knob for distortion and then when I need to solo or play a highlighted part, I kick in the PQ-4. I'd swear it doubles my volume and I can contour the tone in many different ways. The PQ-4 is now my secret weapon and when I have the money to do so, I will have one in both rigs. Again I use the original chorus: the Ce-1. I stick with what works for me. I love this pedal. The chorus is second to none both clean and distorted and the vibrato is cool for the solo in "Suzie Q". The flanger rarely gets used (Eagles - "Those Shoes" and the little rhythm part before the solo in "Are you Gonna go my way?" are all that come to mind right now) but I keep it on the board. It was my first "vintage" pedal. Of course, the DD-3 is an invaluable tool. I bought this pedal in 1989 or 1990 (can't remember) and it has been in my rig in one way or the other ever since. I sometimes bring the Cry Baby to practice but I find myself using it just because it's there so I don't do that too often.

Again, I am really happy with this rig. The only change I am considering is switching out the head for a Carvin X100B. If I make this switch, the Peavey head would now go into my home rig and handle the second output from the Yamaha FX500 so I can run that rig in stereo as well. Very similar to what A.L did on the Vapor Trails Tour: A pair of amps for the main stereo image and another pair kicked in to create space and depth. However, I would probably use in a "dirty - clean" scenario more often.

Very nice rig though.

What are the preliminary ideas for the distortion?

Thanks! Well a vintage MXR D+ comes to mind right away but I want to look into all other options first. I've allways used amp distortion but I'm thinking a pedal might be fun too.

Please give me your Ce-1 and then we can be friends.

i dig yo rig. There's a soft spot in my heart for Rush so I suppose there should be room for Rush fans as well.

Just guessing...

But the CE-1 gobbled it up, chewed it up and spat it out, a mangled mess of inferior chorus?

(not that the H20 is bad, but the CE-1 is the holy grail of choruses so the legend goes)

Thanks!!!

I traded it for the Vox Wah and some cash. The H2o is awsome of course it just wasn't for me. I'd rather have a dedicated analog delay.

Mine has been modded to include Orange Drop capacitors and the tubes in the pre-amp are not stock. The Orange Drops make a huge difference. Also, running the amp through a 4x12 cabinet makes a big difference. The amps internal speaker provides the highs while the cabinet takes care of the lows.

Oh and I play RUSH of course and any other kind of rock that I like.

It's true. The CE-1 is much better than the H2o. It's thick and dark and fuses with the tone of your guitar. The H2o is great don't get me wrong but The Ce-1 is what I've always wanted.
