The Devil's Chord Progression

Has anyone else noticed that this one is being used by just about everyone?

1-6-3-7

In a minor key, of course.

dunno, but the devils sound is apparently the two notes that alternate at the start of purple haze by hendrix. Centuries ago it was considered to be the sound of satan and you werent allowed to play them together like that in churches etc...

Those two notes are an Octave apart, in the case of Purple Haze an A# I think. That whole system of playing two notes and octave apart is the basis of Jonny Greenwoods Tremolo Strumming Style, like in Creep and Just.

The devil's chord is actually the tritone. Take a power chord and move the fifth down a half-step. It would be like this:
G - 7
D - 6
A - 5

The mighty dimished fifth. It was actually outlawed in the Middle Ages for sounding Satanic. Also known as "diabolous in musica" (not sure on the spelling), Latin for "the devil in music".

Diminished 5ths are all over the place in the Cursive song, "Gentleman Caller". Awesome song.

Fitting that it's the interval used for the most evil riff in history, Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath \m/

note to self: avoid 1-6-3-7 in a minor key at all costs!

Didn't they know that that was that song by Ugly Kid Joe? Remember that song?

I think that progression is also a Boston song. Can't remember which one, though...

I think that the most overused chord progression is 1 - 6 - 7

It seems like Iron Maiden cannot write a song without it.
