odd meters?

is it worthwhile to intentionally write riffs around weird meters like 5/4 or 7/4?

how can we answer that for you? to me, anything that pushes me is a good thing, thus i practice with odd rhythms. what qualifies as "worth it" to you?

It is most certainly worth playing in 'odd' time sigs. It improves your rhythmic awareness.

Plus they're cool

i think that the more i play in meters like 5/4, 7/8, 9/8. or 11/8 the less i like playing in 4/4 or 6/8, its just so INVIGORATING.

Don't overdo it. Bands that use odd timings TOO MUCH just end up sounding too formulaic. Tool, can you hear me?
If it FEELS good, do it. I have a couple songs that are in seven or six at some parts, but it wasn't even intentional. It was just a natural progression in the song. Don't think of music in terms of mathematics. If it makes sense in the context of the song, try it out.

Possibly the worst thing to do is write a groove that really belongs in an everyday signature like 4/4 or 3/4 and try to add extra stuff to push it to, say, 5/4, or something else.

But otherwise, yeah - if you enjoy messing around with weird time signatures, go ahead. You just have to approach them differently than the traditional stuff.

Like entrada said, it's all in the feel.
