Unusual Inspiration
Does anything unusual influence your writing/playing/whatever?
I find it inspiring to read/ watch things relating to outer space, insects, plants, religion, history, etc. Pretty much, the science/national geographic/ whatever else they put out. channel= has me writing. I've been watching alot of youtube videos and reading up on things such as marine life and predatory bugs such as centipedes.. and find that it really sparks the inspiration to play and write lyrics and such. Music doesn't really influence my music all that much. oh ya.. and fireworks, fireworks are pretty.. |

I find reading books with out of the ordinary plots and story structure to be good inspiration as it lets you parallel those ideas in music structure.

Reruns of Seinfeld always spark something in my brain, I'll be watching TV and get an idea. The problem is sometimes I'll have something I really like but be too lazy to record it and then forget it when the theme music plays at the end.
I also find looking at new gear helps, because I feel guilty for buying new gear when I should be playing guitar instead. I feel too guilty to buy anything and just go practice all day for a few days. In that time, I either come up with something awesome and realize I don't need any new gear to write cool music or else I don't come up with anything and go buy whatever I was looking at and exploit it. |

i made a song based on the beep of a roommates answering machine and dulcimer in college.
usually its something someone says, or something i read somewhere that triggers and idea. i used to be totally inspired by a friend of mine who kept an online journal. her writing kind of sparked ideas in my brain. we've since kind of drifted apart and she doesn't keep up her writing like she did while in college. maybe that has something to do with the slow trickle of new songs i've experienced for the last couple of years. that and i find myself "busy with life". i became a husband, got a "grown up job", became a new homeowner. less time to "sit around and wait to be inspired". no more bohemian $9/hr lifestyle. |

may i be a bit too commercial for a second? i would recommend the planet earth dvd series, ive found probobly a life time worth of inspiration in my box set, it seriously just puts you in a good creative mood, a good thinky but good feeling mood. haha, hippy **** i know, but its good.

It may sound crap but listening to other peoples music inspires me. That might not sound unusual but Im not very good at picking out song lyrics. So i start thinking of my own to go over the top. That tends to inspire me.
Taking a walk also helps-usually when drunk. Music is moving and flowing, so you can't expect to write it sitting or standing still. If you're moving at a pace I find a rhythm will come easily.

i usualy get insperation from dreams(when i'm sleeping)
or if i read a wired work in a book i'll look it up in the dictonery and write a song about it or what i think of moder societiy or something like that but i think that insperation can be unusaly or strange |

I like putting on heavy emo music and just playing and writing. I always end up with lighter stuff though....go figure...and Foo Fighters...for whatever reason, I always seem to write best while listening to some Foo Fighters....go figure.
EDIT: One time I was influenced by a smell...again, go figure.

My best song inpiration tends to come from my spurts of major depression. I'm dead serious.
after my one bit of depression I wrote up a part for a song, then when I played it again I pretty much started crying, it seemed so mucg like how I was feeling and how i'm feeling now. Sorry about the depression rant, but I needed too.

inspiration
straight up i feel like moving around does help. I personally find that playing basketball by myself helps. It gives you lots of time to think. I don't think it's easy to write when your listening to other peoples music, but other's music will definitely inspire you to want to write.

I like playing different instruments, it could be a friends or one that i am working on at the guitar shop where i work.
I can take that riff or part and use it with my own instruments.

I get inspired by organic life too. Things like space are epic and unknown so it tends inspire my curiousity, much like a new effect or different guitar. I thought the concept of the Tribes of Nuerot record "adaptation and survival" was pretty intense. They recreated insect noises/what it would sound like to be an insect.
