Is it worth teaching my singer to play guitar?

Right, my band are a four piece with a usual bass/drums/geetah, but with a keyboard/singerist. Nothing too unusual there, but some of the stuff we've been writing recently could really benefit from having another guitar playing the harmonies that I've written. At the moment they're being played on synth, and although its alright, its not exactly as cool as a guitar. So, what do people think, should we go through all the trouble of teaching him to play the riffs and get a rig for him or just sort something else out? Another member is not really an option, we're a very keyboards orientated band and we don't want to crowd them out.

No. It takes a long time to get to a competent level on guitar.

nope. either just have him play the riffs on keys or work out your guitar parts for him to play on keys and then you can play the new riffs on guitar.

i dont see the problem with having him learn a little guitar. even for roots and power chords, and just standard rhythm chord work from time to time. just to fill space.

and then work him up to tapping notes on the fretboard while playing keys with the other hand.

i personally like it when the singer mostly just sings, maybe adds a little guitar here and there. but because i have no patience, i tried to teach my singer the ropes a little and it was annoying, so i gave up on that and we ditched the idea and got another guitarist.

i like that setup better myself.

why not both the def tones and mad season did it. i'm sure a few other famous bands have trained the singer quickly to fill out the sound a bit on a second guitar. as long as he's not doing anything too complicated you'll only need a few months for him to be able to do it.

It may take you some time so if time is of the essence then you'd be better off by geting him to play the backing part...

What kind of stuff do you play?

Do you really need a second guitar? Or can keyboards cut it?

Nothin' wrong with a 5-piece band. If the 'Stones could do it, so can you. And any chance you live in Arizona? Never been in a band before, I'd DIE just for the chance to play a few chords here and there...:P

If he's already competent with keyboards, it shouldn't take him too long to pick up some simple things on the guitar.

Smile

Add another Guitarist & let him continue on the keys. I had a singer in a band that could already almost kind of sort of play and what a pain in the COOL-O that became. Get a good second guitarist and watch your skills grow instead of watching your singer's skill grow painfully slow.

Like I said, we don't want to add another guitar because we're focused around the keyboards and synths. When we tried a practice with another guitar it all got too heavy and hard rock for our tastes. Plus we work well as a four piece, adding another guy in would take too long to get him to the stage we're currently at.

Arg0: at the moment we're officially 'harmonised-electro-circus-rock', but out of earshot of the drummer we call ourselves indie rock really.
