This retro-looking unit looks like it might be able to crank out some pure “vintage” distortion tones along the lines of the Kinks, the Stones, or even the Beatles. Well, nothing could be further from the truth! The Fabtone is really heavy on the the high gain and more at home in the shred-fizzy world of bands like The Smashing Pumpkins or Mogwai. It’s a fine pedal for dishing up a thick wall of distortion that practically consumes every ounce of your guitar’s character. Think of it as a Big Muff with a tighter low-end or maybe a Proco Rat with more tone control. It’s in that over the top distortion realm but holds it own against the old standards very well. At flat eq settings the Fab-Tone comes off a little on the trebly side but a bit of fine tuning yields remarkable results. High and mid controls tame the tone but its the massive low-end that makes this unit really shines.
